Square Day was instituted in 1980 by Dennis Pierce and Briar Hamilton, members of the Manawatu Scottish Society Pipe Band. It had a small beginning with only two bands, but has grown steadily and now has around twenty entries. The venue, Palmerston North Square, is a lovely setting of 4 acres of park, in the centre of the city. It is always held on the second Saturday in December. At the AGM of the RNZPBA, held Saturday 2nd March 2013, a submission by Celtic Pipe Band was successful in securing the right to run the 2015 NZ Pipe Band Championships in Nelson. Dates will be 13th and 14th of March 2015. Venues will be focused around Trafalgar Park and the Trafalgar Centre Two day event
